About the Book

Is there more to managing our money for God’s kingdom than we realize?

A Life of Total Stewardship

Stewardship is a word we don’t hear very often . . . until our church needs to build a new building. But does Scripture say more about stewardship than that? Is there more to managing our money for God’s kingdom than we realize?

In Stewards, Not Owners, Dana and Bill Wichterman challenge conventional views on wealth and giving, encouraging Christ-followers to put all their financial muscles to work for the Lord. Rather than focusing on simply giving away 10 percent of their income, Dana and Bill challenge readers to activate 100 percent of their wealth and wealth-creating potential for kingdom goals.

Based on Years of Experience

First, we’ll begin with setting the theological foundation in chapter 1. In chapter 2, we establish that we’re stewards, and everything belongs to God. Chapter 3 explores the principles of stewardship that should guide us. In chapter 4, we make the case that God loves multiplication—including nonexploitive and God-honoring profit. We’ll examine in chapter 5 why giving and investing are both important to the Lord. Chapter 6 lauds the role of work as integral to God’s creation and what it means to be human. In chapter 7 we will explore the many dangers of money—what we call a “dangerous blessing.” We will get practical about how to steward money in chapter 8, and in chapter 9 we’ll examine how God is guiding the church’s journey of joy in aligning money with faith. We’ve also included appendices with a to-do list to start you on your stewardship journey; books, blogs, podcasts, organizations, and websites that have shaped our understanding of stewardship; and a list summing up what we hope to communicate.

"I’ve grown up with the belief that generosity is important and godly, and I don’t think that’s a controversial thought. But with Stewards, Not Owners, the Wichtermans offer a beautiful and vital template for how to be generous. I wish I’d had this book twenty years ago; it’s essential you read it now."

Dallas JenkinsCreator, The Chosen

“The Wichtermans’ book underscores a truth that’s deeply important to me: we are stewards of God’s gifts to us, and with those gifts come corresponding responsibilities to others. We who live in wealthy Western economies have been given the opportunity to humbly support and care for the poor and the powerless—and this opportunity is joyful, not drudgery. Jesus was right when He said, ‘It’s better to give than to receive.’”

Sen. Christopher A. CoonsU.S. Senator, Delaware
